Community of Christ’s three year lectionary is based on the Revised Common Lectionary. Alongside the passages from the Hebrew Testament and the New Testament are verses taken additional scriptural sources embraced by Community of Christ. Those additional works are The Book of Mormon and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants (D&C). (Please see the note further down the page regarding versions of scripture)
Along with the lectionary Community of Christ gives each year a theme, and each Sunday a theme. At present the last two months of Year B (2005-2006) and the Year C (2006-2007)’s lectionary scriptures and themes can be found here. Year A (2007-2008) will be added shortly. Year B will not be updated until the the themes for Year B (2008-2009) is out. You can also find the Themes and Scriptures for Year B (2005-2006), Year C (2006-2007), and Year A (2007-2008) on the Community of Christ website:
Allow the Spirit to Fill You (2005-2006 “Year B”)
Share the Peace of Christ (2006-2007 “Year C”)
Passionate For Peace (2007-2008 “Year A”)
There are various versions of the “Bible” in use by the various Christian Traditions in the world and their content varies. Some have more books, some have more within a book and so on. There are also many different translations of them from the earliest manuscripts in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. So which Bible should you use? I recommend that you us a modern version of the scriptures in the language or languages you are most familiar and comfortable. For English readers I recommend starting with the New Revised Standerd Version (NRSV). If you are using the Inspired Version at times there is differences between its versification and that of the Kings James version on which it is based. When the versification is different from most Christian biblical canons it is noted on the lectionary by providing the location ocorresponding passage indicated by the letters IV. When possible I also recommend comparing several different translations into your language, or if you are comfortable with several languages, then perhaps reading translations into several different languages, or perhaps the oldest existing languages of the text if you know Hebrew and or Greek. (You can look up scriptures from the NRSV online by going to oremus Bible Browser)
If you wish to look up the verses from these additional sources of scripture please be aware that collections of scripture by these names are embraced by other traditions also, but in many cases there are differences. For the Book of Mormon I suggest using one of versions which use the 1908 Community of Christ versification system, some versions printed today using this system are:
Authorized Edition (AV) 1908 edition (Community of Christ)
Revised Authorized Edition (RAV) 1966 edition (Community of Christ)
Restored Covenant Edition (RCE) (Zarahemla Research Foundation)
The Doctrine and Covenants I recommend using a version published by Community of Christ. The current Doctrine and Covenants published by Community of Christ contains sections numbered from 1 through 163. Section 163 was canonized on March 30, 2007 (So it might be a bit before its available bound, but should soon be available as an insert). While some of the sections between the numbers 1-112 (in Community of Christ Versions) may be found in other traditions Book of Doctrine and Covenants, they often will carry a different section number.
If the only versions you are able to use are from other traditions there are versification tables that can help. Though these charts are helpful with the Book of Mormon, they are less helpful with the Doctrine and Covenants as many of the sections are unique to Community of Christ. (Some traditions that are made up of those who have chosen to form a new body rather than remain part of Community of Christ often embrace many of the unique Community of Christ sections. Most of these traditions embrace at least Sections 1-138, others embrace up and including 155 most do not contain any sections from 156 onwards, though there may be some that do.)
